little tree gallery is pleased to present the work of Haden Nicholl in his second solo show entitled The Feel Good Movie Of The Year. Presenting over 50 different works utilizing ink, colored pencil, and watercolor on paper, Mr. Nicholl personifies inanimate objects to illuminate the tension, mystery, and fragility of self reflection and human relations.

Strawberry ice cream is in a melted puddle on the floor. A thought-bubble comes out of the melted ice cream. In the thought-bubble is a pristine ice cream cone.

In a style unique to his own, Mr. Nicholl’s tapestry of works weaves a telling story of the human condition. Mr. Nicholl hones in on the luminal moments of contemplation, where a situation could have dire consequences. From the literal to the emotional, Mr. Nicholl is able to find specific spaces that are often times foreboding, astute, and demanding of the viewer.

A match looks guilty…sad as it watches in the corner as sticks of dynamite surround a lit candle.

Mr. Nicholl gives life to a wide variety of ‘characters’. Dynamite, matches, box traps, crevasses, clouds, tree stumps, and rope are just some of the objects with supporting roles in this ambitiously executed body of work. Mr. Nicholl’s vibrant and playful style of overlapping scenes and symbols are the prodigious result of a vast body of work on the scale of a great American novel.

A puffy white cloud has multiple nooses hanging from it. The ropes are gently swaying in the wind.

Mr. Nicholl has devised an appealing show that would excite a five year old as much as it would intrigue a fifty year old. His work is able to touch on so many different levels that the work transcends the typical art show and becomes a fantastical experience; one that shouldn’t be missed.

Haden Nicholl has shown extensively throughout the Bay Area and abroad, including London and Quito. Mr. Nicholl is a regular at Southern Exposure’s Monster Drawing Rally and currently works with troubled teens in a locked-down facility in San Francisco. Mr. Nicholl received his MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and his BA in Psychology and BFA from the University of Denver.
