little tree gallery is pleased to present the work of Haden Nicholl
in his highly-anticipated
first San Francisco solo show entitled Improvising in the Field. Mr.
Nicholl will show
new paintings, drawings, and sculpture that display common household
items that can be
utilized for assassinations and the resolution of urban conflict.
Haden Nicholl's playful style contrasts starkly with the disturbing
subject matter. A
cotton-ball-covered cinderblock hangs precariously over the bait, a
candy bar, waiting to
fall on its prey. A painting of a can of food and a nail seems harmless
until the title,
Biological Toxin, leads the viewer to the botulism colony punch line.
Chilling, current,
silly, and smart, Mr. Nicholl has assembled a cohesive show designed
to twinge the
viewer.
Haden Nicholl has shown extensively in the Bay Area at Southern Exposure,
New
Langton Arts, Root Division, Artist Television Access, and Lucky Tackle,
among others,
and his video work has screened nationally and internationally. Mr.
Nicholl received
both his BFA and BA in Psychology from the University of Denver and
subsequently
received his MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute.
