little
tree gallery is pleased to present the work of Casey Logan in his inspired
solo show entitled I Believe in the Power of the Absurd. Featuring sculpture
and photography, Mr. Logan’s work harkens the viewer back to science
classes, the concepts being all at once familiar and perplexing. And
like a prized teacher, Mr. Logan has the ability to enthuse and astonish.
Casey Logan makes seemingly benign objects mysterious, using conceptual
twists. In a featured sound sculpture, Mr. Logan takes a world globe,
cuts it in half, and fills each interior void with a speaker. The two
earth-speakers emit ‘natural phenomenon sounds’ that fill
the gallery. Mr. Logan has an affinity for the illogical, playing with
gravitational laws and other ‘known’ scientific rules that
intermingle with history, transportation, and mysticism. In this fantastical
show, sailboats careen over the edge of a gallery overhang; sections
of a B-2 Bomber dangle in the air, seemingly ripped apart mid-battle;
and impossible waves meet in the center of the ocean. Each piece renders
a dramatic flash of a troubled time.
Among Casey Logan’s numerous honors and accomplishments, he was
a NASA fellowship recipient through the San Francisco Art Institute,
where he also received his MFA in sculpture. Mr. Logan has had solo
shows in Kansas City, MO; Amarillo, TX; and Arlington, TX. Mr. Logan’s
work has been featured at various venues such as Rocket Gallery, London;
Gen Arts Emerge, San Francisco; Root Division, San Francisco; and at
the ad hoc De Young Art Project, San Francisco. He currently lives in
Oakland.
