little tree gallery is pleased to present the work of Rocky McCorkle in his solo show entitled You And Me On A Sunny Day. Presenting new photography, Mr. McCorkle continues his series of 24 photographs depicting the life of an elderly couple in today’s aggrieved world. The narrative of the photographs is supported by Mr. McCorkle’s slick, stylized lens and large format camera. The vivid colors and focused scenes pump energy into a stereotypically quiet life.

The vibrant colors and dedicatedly focused lens give the images a Madison Avenue appeal; this makes the photographs immediately approachable. Upon closer inspection though, the true content of the work begins to tell a story, and this is where Mr. McCorkle begins to shine.

Focusing on two main characters, Mr. McCorkle has created a movie in still images. The silent nature of Mr. McCorkle’s ‘film’ is a great departure from present Hollywood features, full of screeching noise and impossible visual effects. The viewer is given the slick look of today’s films void of the accoutrements. Instead, one must ruminate over a silent still. Meditate on the image of a dead orange tree or a dimming skyline. These examples are not the main focus of a piece, yet they remain part of an intricate tapestry designed for the viewer to explore.

The two characters, an elderly man and woman, eloquently continue the back-and-forth with Hollywood, and, on a greater scale, pop culture. The elders of our population are often ignored in media. In Mr. McCorkle’s work, a scared woman becomes familiar and endearing as she wanders through an old apartment building. The determined man we see seems all at once earnest and obdurate. These characters illicit human emotions that we can all relate to, and their earnest appeal rings louder than a teen sitcom or a hipster magazine ever could.

Rocky McCorkle has shown extensively throughout the United States at such venues as Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and at the Los Angeles Center For Digital Art, among others. He received his MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and his BFA from Ohio State University.
