Chad Moore's paintings and sculptures are intense abstractions that
meander in movement, color, and theme. The ability to house cryptic
darkness with a flickering subtext of light propels the work beyond
simple categorization.
The fierce physicality of Moore's painting is evident in brush strokes
that muscle across the canvas. Colors cover colors forming mesmerizing
tapestries, as if the oil captured the canvases like a woolly mammoth
in a bog. Moore's work is not for the faint of heart. He doesn't paint
pop-tastic images of fun. The work brings levity at a time when ignorance
can be preferred.
Altocumulus Castellanus is a nearly six-foot tall painting that hides
a dark mass at its core. Taking its name from a cloud formation, the
piece speaks of bad weather to come. While weather can be cold and unforgiving,
predicting its future is negligible. Within this dark and foreboding
work, along the top and bottom of the piece, light yellows and bright
blues seep out towards the edges. While grim outcomes can be pervasive,
the piece has the ability to serve as either an omen or as a sober warning.
Yet painting alone doesn’t confine Moore. Moore attaches toy figurines
on panels, coupled with a variety of textured materials such as industrial
spray foam and plastic cocktail swords. The colorful panels serve as
backdrops to an emerging Loch Ness Monster, a fighting Undertaker wrestling
toy, and the rear half of a plastic cow. Each piece has its own elegance.
The Loch Ness Monster gracefully extends its torso out of a green, murky
scene. The Undertaker’s mischievous arms have morphed into a bulbous,
angry claw and a colorful sinuous explosion. And the hindquarter of
the small cow seductively points to the lower left hand corner of the
panel, blending into the paint’s hectic pattern and chunky application.
These three pieces, along with a dynamic sculpture that will hang in
the gallery window, round out an emotionally charged show.
Chad Moore has shown in the Bay Area and beyond. He splits his time
between San Francisco and Thailand. This is Moore’s second show
at the gallery.
