LITTLE TREE GALLERY SOCIAL CLUB
A project by:
Artist Andrew Tosiello & Curator Clare Haggarty
You
go to the club –the social club. Everybody meets at the social
club. From the outside it looks like nothing… From the inside,
it doesn’t look much better: a brass coffeemaker in the corner,
some booze behind the bar, a few cheap chairs and tables, and a room
in the back for serious business. And that’s about it. You hang
around the club playing cards and shooting the shit.
~ F.B.I. Special Agent Joseph D. Pistone
a.k.a. Donnie Brasco
August
6 – August 23, 2008 little tree gallery, 3412 22nd Street (@ Guerrero),
will be transformed into a social club. A closed club, it will be off
limits to all except friends and associates of the artist, the curator,
and the gallery owners. The casual viewer or passerby may feel free
to stop by, as long as they understand where they stand: outside.
Opening reception & cash poker game: Saturday, August 9,
2008 6 – 9 pm
Social Club/Gallery hours: Wednesday through Saturday 12 – 6 pm
Hang and shoot the shit at the social club on Thursdays August 14th
& 21st 6 – 9 pm and Saturdays August 16th & 23rd 12 –
6 pm. Play some cards, drink some espresso or have a shot,
scheme and plot heists, buy or sell some swag, and potentially be incriminated
or immortalized by having your picture snapped by a surveillance team.
What services do exclusion offer the artist and the mobster? Can socializing
be seen as an integral and effective part of the artistic endeavor?
Does the comparison of organized crime with artistic production, presentation
and reception offer any insight into either activity?
These ideas and more will be kicked around during Thursday night &
Saturday afternoon sessions at the Little Tree Gallery Social Club.
For inquiries and questions regarding the show, please contact J. Brent
